In memory and hope

By James A. Galgano

There is now forever no longer an defensible excuse

Why on police enforcement are permitted to continue their abuse

Based unduly and unfairly upon race, color, class, or creed

Our police are here to protect and serve us all equally

Not just to uphold only privileged rights or those owning property

Our constitution was built upon the blood, protests and revolution

So that every citizen would be treated the same without disparity

Ensuring daily for all the right of life happiness and liberty

Our nation is based on laws and expanding rights through civil unrest

Focused upon improving the life and livelihood of all equally as a test

Whether in time of war or periods of relative calm and peace

People in our nation rose up to through collective action to make disparity cease

From abolition to civil war, during times of economic downturn or prosperity

From the struggle for civil rights for all to labors rights to organize collectively

Many in our population chose to make sacrifices of their lives and freedom

To ensure all rights and liberties would at last being honor and protected equally

No matter our race, color, class or ideology every life matters the same eternally

Our founders may have been imperfect but they built our nation upon laws

Which must be adhered to then changed or revised to correct their every flaw

In order to build a more perfect union establish justice and insure domestic tranquility

Peaceful protest and collective action have been used to effectuate change permanently

Thomas Jefferson once surmised change must unfortunately occur after blood been shed

To quench the thirst of liberty so through such sacrifice it be preserved and protected

Once more today we find ourselves once more upon the precipice of some hopeful tomorrow

Where our work to preserve a more perfect union continues despite all pain and sorrow
